National Allotments Week 2021

09 Aug 2021

This year, National Allotments Week runs from the 9th of August. The theme in 2021 is all about plotting for the future and how allotments are helping us to become more sustainable as a nation and bringing communities together.

Allotments

Allotments are typically kept by those who have little to no garden, like those who live in the city, or in blocks of flats. However, there has been an increase in recent years of people investing in an allotment plot simply as a place to grow their own fruit and veg away from their main garden.
Allotments are great spaces for you to kickstart your own growing. Your plot will usually be surrounded by a number of mature plots kept by individuals who will be happy to pass on their knowledge to beginners.

Sustainability

Growing your own fruit and vegetables can help you to have less of a reliability on supermarkets for your healthier foods. By growing your own you are able to know what goes into them, including pesticides and additives.
Over the last few years, there has been a push towards becoming more sustainable. This is across the board and includes reducing deforestation. When you grow your own vegetables and fruits you are playing your part in helping the country become self-sufficient, and less reliant on unsustainable resources.

Community spirit

There are very few places where the community spirit is still thriving. A few quiet streets, a local pub, maybe even the corner shop. But one place where the community spirit is thriving is the allotment.
If you are new to allotments, or even to a particular veg, those around you are usually happy to help out with some tricks and tips. Over time you can build up a wealth of knowledge from things that others have experienced.
Likewise, if you’re going away for a week or two, you can always call on the kindness of those around you to keep an eye on things while you’re away.
In many allotments, there is also an element of sharing and swapping. For those who have too many beans, you can pop across to a neighbour and swap for some carrots. You’ll be surprised by some of the wonders that you can end up with!

Home Allotments

Some of us are blessed to have large gardens. If this includes you, you might be more interested in creating your very own home allotment! By creating a vegetable garden in your garden you are able to pop outside and care for your plot whenever you like. You can also be sure that there are no pests (like foxes and cats) interfering with your growth. It might seem like a daunting task, but our team can be on hand to turn that unused space into the perfect area to grow your own veg! We might even add you in a frame or two.

If you are interested in turning part of your garden into your very own home allotment, please get in touch with a member of the team today who will be happy to discuss these plans with you. Remember to check back to our blog monthly for updates on which jobs need doing in your garden!
