Garden in the Winter

How To Keep Your Garden Flourishing In Winter

08 Sep 2023

As we approach the autumn, temperatures will start to drop and gardeners across the nation will have to say farewell to their summer blooming flower beds and gardens. While the winter is mainly associated with cold weather, bare trees and lifeless gardens, there is no reason why gardeners should have to witness their garden becoming dull. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to keep your garden flourishing during the winter.

Move Delicate Plants

Before the winter sweeps in, make sure to move any vulnerable plants from outside to your conservatory or greenhouse if you have one. This will help protect your most delicate plants such as perennials from the cold and frost. It’s worth keeping an eye on the weather forecasts to keep updated and be prepared for any sudden weather changes. For potted delicate plants, we recommend moving them to frost resistant pots if not already or placing mulch around them for extra winter protection.

Prune Your Plants

Pruning helps to stimulate plant growth, controls its shape and improves a garden’s overall appearance. It involves trimming and removing the withered, diseased or weak parts of a plant. Shrub roses and fruit bushes are examples of plants that require pruning. The best time for pruning is early spring, however, there is nothing stopping from pruning your plants in the autumn to help them flourish and look their best during the winter.

Maintain Your Garden

Autumn is your final choice to mow your garden before growth starts to slow down. In some cases, you might even get away without mowing, unless there’s a mild spell of weather and the grass keeps growing. In that case, you can mow it occasionally on a high cut setting. If your garden looks a bit run down, you might want to add additional grass nutrition such as lawn feed to rejuvenate it during the winter.

Grow Evergreen And Hardy Plants

Another way to keep your garden flourishing in the winter is by growing evergreen and hardy plants. Replacing summer flower beds with winter tolerant ones such as heathers and pansies can rejuvenate a lifeless garden. Unlike deciduous plants, evergreen plants are known for staying green and healthy even through the cold temperatures. For instance, the camellia shrub has evergreen leaves which look great all year around as well as flowering in late winter or early spring with shades of white, yellow, pink and red.
